In a place outside our realm of time and space the Allfather, Odin (or Woden, if you wish)offered the Norns a sacrifice in retun for the wisdom of the Runes which were buried at the base of the Tree of Life. He told them that he would give them his right eye. They told him that was not enough. He would have to hang upside down on the Tree and let his blood paint the Runes to give them life and that he must give himself over to the Runes.
